| | Do other birds hate jackdaws? We had a new Jackdaw visiting the garden the last few days and as soon as it landed on the food two wood pigeons (who I hadn't seen all day) seemed to come out of nowhere to chase it off. Today, the jackdaw has come in again and this time a magpie (who is around the local area but not a visitor of our garden) came to chase it off..... could anyone explain this, many thanks. |

| | | Re: Do other birds hate jackdaws? This behaviour is quite common. Birds, and some other animals, with an established territory will chase away any newcomers. It isn't anything anti Jackdaw, they will try to chase away any creature regarded as a threat or unfair competition.
'My' crows chase away wood pigeons from the birdtable and try to see off Herring Gulls, but it's a bit more even matched there. Occasionally birds will gang up to chase away a larger bird which is seen as a threat.
The interesting thing here is how do they work out what is a new arrival or new threat. |

We have Jackdaws that visit the garden and usually the other birds don't seem too put off by them even though they prefer their own 'space', but recently they seem more weary of them making alot of noise etc, but I had wondered with many of them having nests in and around the garden if they sense that the Jackdaws are a threat as they will take baby birds if they locate a nest |

| | | Re: Do other birds hate jackdaws? yes, I agree, we used to have one single wood pigeon who would hog all of the food and leave nothing left for the small birds and the other blackbirds, and starlings. Then a few weeks later the pigeon ended up dead in our garden. We think the other birds somehow plotted to 'do away with him'. The birds usually watch out for each other, but I think with this one he caused quite a bit of friction in the community.... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
