First cuckoo

First cuckoo for me today. Its a relief to get it for my year list as they are not guaranteed these days.

I heard my first one of the year on Monday, at Ashridge, Herts.

I first hear (and I think, saw) a cuckoo last Saturday. I was out yesterday and heard the cuckoo several times.

I then spotted what I intially thought was a kestrel but then realised it was a cuckoo.

The sun was in, the bird was perched in the shade and my view was obscured.

This is the only shot that I kept.



I moved a bit closer but every shot was really out of focus. I think that some of the nearer foliage must have been in the way and fooled my camera (and me). Disappointing that I could not get better snaps, but still a thrill and a privilege.

Thought we heard a cuckoo weeks ago maybe 2 months ago, but you all seem to be saying they've only just landed so we must have got mixed up.

Its unlikely to have been a cuckoo but if your not into birds so much, a wood pigeon makes a call which could be construed as cuc...oooh
