| | | Blackbird nest? Just before I got the door fitted to one of my outbuildings, a blackbird seems to have claimed it! Every day, it seems to bring in copious quantities of dried grass etc.. and is piling this up on one of the roof timbers. It does not seem to be building a (recognisable) nest and this ever growing pile of material is in a rather precarious position.
Is this typical of blackbird behaviour, or is it storing up material in case there is a shortage?????
I haven't fitted the door - I'm waiting to see what the blackbird actually does. |

The nest is an untidy cup built by the female from vegetation, such as grass and twigs, and bound together with mud and finer grasses. The nest is usually in a hedge or bush, though they will use shelves in huts and other outbuildings.

| | | Re: Blackbird nest? The thing is that the blackbird doesn't seem to be making much of a nest - simply piling loads of dry material on a narrow beam. It looks like a long shaggy blonde wig!! |

Though personally I haven't yet seen one, it does call it Untidy! It'll be interesting to see the developments, keep us posted on the fledglings/juveniles!
Can you attach a photo? |

| | | Re: Blackbird nest? Blackbirds sometimes build a twig platform type thing on which to build their nest if the nest is not in a bush. They'll probably construct their nest on the twigs. The inside of nest will be lovely and soft tho with moss and snuggly feathers, sheeps wool etc. Looks like your door is gonna have to wait

| | | Re: Blackbird nest? We've got two seperate nests apart from the garden ones,, one in a shed one in a greenhouse and I wouldn't call them particularly untidy, quite the opposite in fact apart from one having a piece of polythene in it, there's pics of these in my topic, Blackbirds Master Builders if you wanted to see them for comparison |

Hope the picture works. This is the result of 4 days work by the bird. As you can see, it doesn't resemble a nest (like the other photos) - it's still a pile of dried grass etc.. - and another pile on the floor. Not sure what this blackbird is up to. |

| | | Re: Blackbird nest? Hi,
I see what you mean, but perhaps the parts hanging down are irrelevant to the rest of the nest; it may JUST be the section on the beam. Quote: |

| I imagine the parts at ground level have fallen away. |
