Crows

Whats with them recently they are getting very clever!! I saw one picking up a whole, large dead bunny by the side of the motorway and trying to fly with it and also today I saw a crow fly down in the road and grab (rather quickly) a large mcdonald's bag (which was twice the size of the crow) and fly off with it, now my question is to any other bird that bag would of been ignored as its not food, so how did the crow reconise it was a mcdonalds bag so knowing the chance of some food in it is pretty high!

Re: Crows

Probably a carrion crow living up to it's name. Carrion means dead or rotting flesh. As for the Mac Donalds-whats the difference!

Re: Crows

Its probably eaten out of one before - out of a bin or summat, and remembers the colour and shape - clever things crows. Magpies are less bright, when i worked on a golf course we had one that used to collect up balls - presumbably it thought they were eggs !!

Re: Crows

Welcome Sugar Clever things these Crows you know! It's probably doing it's bit for the Keep Britain Clean campaign, and dumped it in a bin somewhere . But I think your onto something as far as them getting clever! We have one in the garden this year and he/she picks up one of the nut baskets and drops it to the ground so that the top lifts off, grabs a beak full and fly's off. trouble is when he/she returns most of the remaining nut's have been taken by the madding hoards, it's like a scene from a Hitchcock movie. Cost's a fortune in nut's but I'm trying to get a picies of it .

Geoff.

Re: Crows

Crows are certainly quick to learn and I guess this one had tried this before, as eeyore says. They're often down by roadsides looking for small bodies and I expect even a Rabbit doesn't look much like a Rabbit when it's met a 40 ton truck, so the crows probably investigate everything they find, just in case it's edible, or a burger.

Re: Crows

There was a program on TV, a number of years ago now, where a group of crows in Japan had learnt to crack nuts by waiting at a zebra crossing (or the Japanese equivelent) for the green man, then running out placing their 'nuts' on the road, scurrying back. After the traffic had started again, the nuts got squished, the green man came on again and they would scurry out and eat the nuts...... very clever!

Re: Crows

Slightly off topic. I drove past a recently plowed field this morning and saw in excess of 200 crows in it. 50% of them were youngsters and all of the adults were very very busy feeding them. Almost like a crow creche

Kev, are you absolutely sure these were Crows, and not Rooks?

Yup Henry, that's what surprised me. Seeing a field of rooks is pretty common, especially this time of year, but this was a field of crows.

Re: Crows

Sorry for doubting you, Kev. It's certainly unusual to see so many Crows together, but I've a vague recollection of hearing/reading about something similar before. I'll have to look it up.

Re: Crows

No problem Henry Rooks I know anywhere because when I was a teenage I got 'adopted' by a rook. I used to cycle to school and one day I saw this rook on my bike and it didn't fly off when I got on the bike. This went on for over a week, every day it would be sitting on the handlebars and would just sit there as I cycled home
