A funny thing happened today. We went out to a reserve (I won't say where, you'll understand why in a minute) to go look at the birdies.
Before went left the carpark, I thought, it's along walk, perhaps I ought to spend a penny.
When I got round the other side of the building marked 'ladies' a man was sitting about 20 ft away with a camera with a massive zoom lens trained on the entrance of the building. Hello, hello I thought, it's a man with a problem. Then he looked up at me and said,'Sorry please don't close the outer door or the swallow can't get in!'
Still a bit puzzled and a bit wary and me being good natured too I agreed to his request.
But sure enough, just inside the door, stuck to the opposite wall only about 6 foot or so off the ground was a swallows nest with about three chicks poking their heads out!!
The mother zoomed in just at that moment, beakful of flies and missed me by only a couple of feet! It was tempting to stay there and watch but I left after doing what I needed to do and left her in peace with her chicks.
I must add that although very tempting, I didn't take any photos and i won't say where it is for obvious reasons. What an experience and I'm glad the chap turned out to be 'normal' after all. ww
