Newcomer needs help!

Thanks for the superb response everyone! On the advice given, I popped into town and bought a pair of Nikon 'Sports lite' 10x25. They didn't have these in 8x25 but I was told in LCE that they used to be £149 - then were reduced down to £99 and are on offer for £49! After looking at some more expensive binoculars, I decided to put away £200 towards a really nice pair of 8x42 Leica or similar. These will be fine for the short term while I see if I get on with birding and they do seem quite good quality. I also bought myself a nice book on British birds! I wish I'd done all this years ago! Good choice Vince. I started serious watching with a pair of Nikon 8x25's and have now got the 10x25 HG model, cost a fair bit more but worth it, extremely light and lovely crisp image even in low-light situations. I would like a pair of Leica's but are they really worth it?

Yes! same here Robin. Maybe someone who has invested a large chunk of money on a really expensive pair of top brand binoculars can comment on wheather the extra expense was/is worth it - regards.
