| | | Re: More Bird Violence - Swans Fantastic shots, I find Swans a bit temperamental at the best of times but at this time of the year I suppose they really go with it.

| | | Re: More Bird Violence - Swans Wow great pictures fantasticly detailed and sharp (and in focus which is better than most of mine), swans are really aggressive towards one another, here are some pictures of the swans at Martin mere not as detailed as yours but you can get the picture.
Feeding time at Martin Mere and one swan turns around and says "hey stop pushing"
The other swan honks back something unmentionable and....
Beutiful but aggressive and dangerous birds
Poirot
P.S. Are all swans really owned by the queen??

As for them being in focus, well I just keep my finger on the button and hope
And if the Queen does really own them all she can come and collect a few, there's hundreds of them down here every winter!
I've found a couple dead in the past at this time of year which appear to be the result of aggression.

I saw one three years ago get beaten up pretty badly and it just had a bit of blood around the bill. It survived as far as I know but spent all afternoon staggering around the field looking sorry for itself.

| | | Re: More Bird Violence - Swans If they still have any of last years now adult cygnets with them the male can get pretty aggressive towards any males and 'drifts' them although this usually takes place in the late autumn early winter |

| | | Re: More Bird Violence - Swans Hi , never bloged before. Was trying to find info on fighting swans and landed here. Saw two males fight to the death today and it was not pretty. This is the second time in two years that I have seen two males fight until one was killed. Our lake is getting crowded and I guess nesting places few. |

| | | Re: More Bird Violence - Swans Hello Lakegirl, and a warm welcome to WAB :-)
It sounds as though you may have some tales to tell, we are all ears here you know! I have never witnessed a fight to the death in swans, although I am not sure I'd want to stick around if it looked as though the outcome would be fatal for one of them
Enjoy the forums and do introduce yourself when you feel comfy

| | Re: More Bird Violence - Swans Hello D, I live on a chain of 9 man made lakes in northern indiana. For the last five years we have watch a pair of swans build and spruce up the same nest every year. This year, they were here only two days when another pair appeared and started building. Then a single swan appeared in the wetlandlans (these wetlands are just outside our bedroom window, very close to the house). We had a hard time figuring out who was who because of all the posturing and actual bumping into each other that went on yesterday. The new "couple" went on nest building between displays, but out veterians did no building yesterday. After the horrible fight, it looked like eveyone was going to live. An hour later one was floating dead in the water. This morning the pair that was nest building yesterday is building again. The original nest has been abandoned. Two swans (orginal female and new male?) are floating around and appear at times to be nest building in another area at times but for the most Part are just swimming and keeping their distance. Once in a while the male will posture with wings extended but then they just keep swimming around each other.
Two summers ago I saw another pair of swans fight to the death. It really is a horrible sight to see but one you can't walk away from. Both times they wound their necks around each other and thrashed each other around, and hit each other with their wings. In the end, both times one drowned the other by climbing on top and pounding with it's neck and wings. I think I am going to like this blogging think. LG |
