Osprey in salcey forest

There has been a sighting of an Osprey at Salcey Forest today at approx 10:00.

Could this be an escapee..Do they keep them in captivity, as there are no fish in salcey..

Re: Osprey in salcey forest

Most likely to be a genuine wild bird on migration. At least 2 have been recorded over London today. Now that I've got a couple of days off the wind changes to northerlies which means I probably won't find any migrants on my local patch!

Re: Osprey in salcey forest

Mostly fish (I think).

I started a thread earlier this afternoon, as one has been spotted where I live on the south coast - it was spotted in the Lower Test Nature Reserve.

Lets hope it's going to be a good year for them!

Thea

I presume if there are no fish then it won't hang around + move on to where it can! Maybe a bit exhausted from migrating?

I didn't see your thread sorry..
We are in the middle of the Northants countryside. There are no fish here.

No probs Kayleigh - I didn't mean it to sound like I might be having a go or anything, just that in my own clumsy way, I wanted to say that there seems to have been a few sightings of these birds so far this year, and wonder if it's because we're all seeing more, or just being more observant/aware and reporting these sightings?

As aeshna5 said, if there's no fish it probably won't hang about. Just wanted a bit of a rest I expect !

Kayleigh,
as aeshna5 says, it's probably just passsing through on its migration. In any case it's not too far from water - for instance, Linford Lakes are within 6-7 miles of Salcey forest.

Re: Osprey in salcey forest

In the past few days there has been plenty of Ospreys heading north up the country according to a well known birders website. Keep your eyes peeled, they can turn up anywhere overhead.

Regards, Chris
