Mr+Mrs+Mrs Chaffinch!

[Wild-Woman]

Is it unusual for Male Chaffinches to have 2 females in tow? They seem to be a happy threesome though and the male is very content.
Seen them about in my garden for days like this now.

Hello wild woman we have so many chaffinches here its a job to tell whose paired up with who,we have as many males as females, perhaps in your case ones the wife and ones the mistress sheila

Don't know about yours. I had two males fighting on my lawn today. There were white flashes everywhere then they zoomed off over the fence.

Mind you he is a VERY handsome chaffinch indeed.

I'm not sure all the winter groups of finches have properly split up yet so might just be the remnant of a flock

I can't remember the details, unfortunately, but I know there's a discussion of chaffinches in Bruce Bagemihl's Biological exuberance, which is about homosexual behaviour and 'unorthodox' family set-ups in animals. Might be worth having a look, if you can find a copy.
