I thought the black and white plumage, presence of water and long sharp bill might have given it away but clearly not, you are looking at the underside of the bill of mergus merganser or Goosander as we commonly know it.

I'm sure it's not - Robin wouldn't do that to us...
It's certainly a curved bill but difficult to tell if it's curved up or down because there's nothing to confirm the angle of the birds head. Some of them are incredible contortionists when preening!
Add in the black head with what looks like it might be white on it's body and I'm going to go right out on a limb and suggest avocet (even though I think the base of the bill looks too thick).

| | | Re: Whose bill? Because of the fuzziness of the photo, I bet it's a reflection of the bird in the water we're looking at. That explains why we were looking at the underside of a Goosander bill. I was certainly thrown by it. |
