Re: Whose bill?

Hmmm... don't think I'd know one of those if it poked me in the eye!

I thought the black and white plumage, presence of water and long sharp bill might have given it away but clearly not, you are looking at the underside of the bill of mergus merganser or Goosander as we commonly know it.

Full pic and the next one this evening!

Re: Whose bill?

All I can see is a penguin!

I'm sure it's not - Robin wouldn't do that to us...

It's certainly a curved bill but difficult to tell if it's curved up or down because there's nothing to confirm the angle of the birds head. Some of them are incredible contortionists when preening!

Add in the black head with what looks like it might be white on it's body and I'm going to go right out on a limb and suggest avocet (even though I think the base of the bill looks too thick).

The UNDERSIDE of the bill, isn't that cheating? The next one will be the inside of some bird's mouth!

Re: Whose bill?

Because of the fuzziness of the photo, I bet it's a reflection of the bird in the water we're looking at. That explains why we were looking at the underside of a Goosander bill. I was certainly thrown by it.

Re: Whose bill?

No, it is a bit fuzzy because of the heavy crop, here is the full-size version:

...and here is the next one. Enjoy!
