id needed for bird of prey

whist driving through oxfordshire we noticed a bird of prey it was bigger than a kestrel, with what i call fingered feathers on the wings was a a red/brown in colour. The tail was fan shaped with a single broad white stripe going across. any guesses on what it could be? thanks in advance

was the white stripe under the tail or on top? at the end of the feathers or at the rump end of the tail?

My instinct is saying "Rough Legged Buzzard"

Could be, but neither have a white tail stripe.

the white stripe was underneath, about 1/4 way down from the end of the feathers.

Just as (if not more) likely to be an escaped Falconer's Harris Hawk.
Fits the description PERFECTLY, and not only that, the location is spot on too.
(Just ask Pete Collins about Harris Hawks in the home counties)...
Not many Rough-Legged Buzzards in Oxon.
Plenty of falconers Harris Hawks.

Sounds good to me. There is one in my area too, plus my brother used to own one, not sure why i didnt think of it!

The Harris Hawk I saw a few weeks ago (and had identified here on WAB) was at Turville in Bucks., but I think that parish borders Oxfordshire (it's certainly within a few miles). So it could possibly be the same bird.
