Nest boxes too late?

Hiya folks.

I have been trying to knock up/ make as many nest boxes as i can, but due to college demands have not got them up as fast as i wanted..i have a couple of tit boxes up, a robin type open fronted box up...another one of these to go up tomorrow ( thurs ) and planned to knock up some more sparrow/tit boxes etc but is it too late for this year?....
Ill keep making them and getting them put up anyway but wondered if its too late to expect a new box to be used this year?

Cheers
Dan

Re: Nest boxes too late?

That's good to hear. I've got a box I haven't put up yet! I will climb the tree this weekend (weather permitting!)

Re: Nest boxes too late?

I'd put them up anyway, if they are not used this season they will be used either for roosting or nesting next season.
Cheers

I wouldnt give up on them just yet Dan..I made another one this yr with its own slate roof.. this will be its second week , Ive been a getting a pair of Blue Tit visiting every other day...maybe they havent quite made up their minds yet.. they are the same pair that feed vegularly in the garden...so fingers crossed...

Re: Nest boxes too late?

Still awaiting a visit to my box, although the tits are showing an interest.
The bird box cam where I work is presently being filled with nesting material so there is still time.
As it is cold this weekend maybe they will use the box to roost.

dan, i was out weekend on my local patch moore lnr cheshire. and the warden was in the processes with volunteers of putting up 300 new boxes, some had birds in within ten minutes of them going up, hope that answers your question.

Re: Nest boxes too late?

with the 'strange' weather becomming common place, the birds breeding calendar has been turned upside down a bit, they seem to be breeding both earlier and later so I don't think it will matter too much when the boxes are put up, there will always be someone house hunting and even if they're only used for roosting the first year they are still serving a purpose so it's never too late
