Cocky magpies outwhit cat!

Happened to glance out of our window earlier, to see my cat studying something in the grass. She seemed unaware that 2 magpies had landed in the garden and were creeping up on her. I realise she must have found a scrap of cold roast potato I'd put on the bird table earlier (she is well fed so why she takes scraps is beyond me). I'd seen the magpies taking them so guess one had dropped a piece.

The magpies worked as a team, one walking around in front to distract her, whilst the other crept up behind her, and pulled her tail! She obviously spun round to grab the bird (but missed), and the other took the potato and flew off.

I've seen a semi-tame magpie we used to have when I was young do this to a neighbours cat, but I've never seen a wild one quite so cocky, nor willing to take such a risk to help a fellow bird gain the spoils of their game!

I can imagine a Magpie doing this, funny birds they are.
