| | | high winds Was wondering where the birds all go during the really high winds and storms we've been having recently. The local starlings seemed to gather themselves before roosting earlier tonight, and hardly any birds came to the bird feeders today. We had fairly low winds until about 1pm when it crept up to 30mph, apparently the met office says it's going to reach 80 tonight. |

| | | Re: high winds Some of them just play, the footage on sky news at Dover there were several gulls just riding the wind, also the ravens on Anglesey just play over the sand dunes in the wind, barrel rolls ect great to watch. Although granted the ravens are not in 80mph gales. I would expect most birds to shelter though. |

| | | Re: high winds we still get birds in high winds, in fact one night when the forecast was particularly bad, I put the feeders in the shed as I didn't want them being blown off by the wind and breaking etc and the next morning there were assorted birdies around the feeding stations in the trees and on the lawn looking puzzled as to where their breakfast had gone, so I had to go out and put them all back and have since left them and there's always someone on them. they hang on for dear life then go in the hedge for a while then venture out again, little birds have to constantly 'top up' especially when it's cold so are usually about but perhaps not for so long |

My feeders are swaying about at crazy angles but as I look out the window there are up to a dozen Goldfinches, five or six Greenfinches and numerous Starlings Great Tits, Blue Tits and House Sparrows clinging on for dear life.
They do have a job landing sometimes but they manage it in the end

| | | Re: high winds They seem to be coping with the high winds here too - still plenty of activity on and around the bird feeders, though they seem to take shelter during the really strong gusts. |

| | | Re: high winds Well it's really windy in cumbria too, nearly got blown away today
When it's windy most of the birds in our garden, mostly the tits and finches go into the cemetry next to the house. The blackbirds and robins tend to stay though.

| | | Re: high winds Well the level in the bird feeder has gone down, but whether or not it's just spilled all over the grass underneath. I think the birds might be hiding in the hedge, but not all of them could fit! |

| | | Re: high winds My two bowls on my bird feeding station were all over the patio this morning, and about ten to twelve wood pigions and doves, all hoovering up the spilled seed, still saved me the job. |
