| | | Re: ID please little brown bird I was assuming male and female because of the different coloured chest.
My daughter thought the redder one looked as if it had been injured.

Barbara | You've got me doubting now Barbara if the second one at any rate is a Redpoll, but I thought the beak was a little too stubby for a Redpoll.
Think we need an expert here which I certainly aren't

| | | Re: ID please little brown bird I'm inclined towards Linnets myself, the first being a juv. male moulting into breeding plumage, the second a juv. female. Can't be 100% sure without seeing the wings though. Some info on habitat would be helpful

| | | Re: ID please little brown bird I dont think they're female reed buntings, with which im familiar. Im no expert but linnet or redpoll sprung to mind. And looking in the Hume RSPB book it looks like a female linnet on top and a male in winter (or perhaps maturing) plumage. But I fairly sure I know less about birds than Ollie!
EDIT: Turniops posted between me looking and posting

| | | Re: ID please little brown bird They were perched in some ash scrub on the seaward side of a quiet country road. The sea is behind them. In front on the other side of the road are open fields, largely grass I think. Less than 1/2 mile away are houses with gardens.
Hope that helps.

Barbara | Thanks Barbara
That sounds like pretty typical Linnet habitat; you'd expect to find Redpolls in more heavily wooded areas.
