Adult on the right .... Juvenile 1st winter plumage on the left
Serin have stronger shorter bill and resemble Canary. |

| | | Re: Serin? ahh i was half right then!...didnt think greenfinch felt right on right and i knew it was one of the two on the left.
Im still a bit confused though as i thought even an adult male siskin had a streaked breast? not plain like a greenfinch?

Regards, Chris | and a pair in Norfolk some years back too.
I reckon this is one of those species that will soon be colonising this country. |

| | | Re: Serin? Just to make sure snakeman as this thread reads a little strange now...but your birds are SISKIN not SERIN..but i think you got that by now?...
I just saw a link on the bird of the day and it appears you thought from this thread that we were saying they were SERIN.

| | | Re: Serin? Found this thread from a Google search of the web (UK).
These two have been appearing in my garden under the seed feeders for the last few days...
At first I assumed Siskin but when I managed to get a photo, the top of the head does suggest Serin (males).
What do you think?
I'm in rural Suffolk so it is possible I suppose.
Sorry for photo poor quality, had to do it through a closed window...

| | | Re: Serin? I would say these are male Yellowhammers, Emberiza citrinella I am going by the stubby thick bill typical bunting, and the colouring on the rump of the bottom bird in the photo, typical of a Yellowhammer rump

| | | Re: Serin? Hi RobinP,
I think I may have figured out how to put it in the archive....
(or I may have done something very wrong as I can only see the thumbnail in the archive, not the full picture.....)
Ollie,
Hadn't considered Yellowhammer, I used the RSPB search tool and it didn't take me there, I think because of the size I quoted.
I take your point, although they do seem a bit small for the size quoted for a yellowhammer. |

Welcome to WAB
Roger | Agreed - Yellowhammers, a relatively unusual bird to get in a garden. Welcome to WAB, retired, what part of Suffolk are you in?
