Woodpigeons

When I walk to work I see a group of woodpigeons on small area of grass and I have counted about 40 of them there at any one time. I was wondering what are they eating, they are always there and i see them in my garden just pecking at the grass?

Well I didn't know the answer to your question, but according to the RSPB Website, it says

"Crops like cabbages, sprouts, peas and grain. Also buds, shoots, seeds, nuts and berries."

Probably chickweed, which woodies seem to enjoy.

I had to net my broad beans last year as they would have eaten the lot..

Yes, they enjoy weed seeds of most sorts. Just how much of this 'area of grass' is actually grass?!!

They like new grass shoots which have started to grow now it is getting lighter and can I say warmer

The local park has up to 40/50 feeding on the grass at the moment

As well as seeds they will be feeding on nutritious new shoots such as clovers, etc.

They also like young fresh shoots of cereal crops which are just comming through, like you Jamie , i saw a flock of about 30 in a field of corn, even although the farmer put out a load of sticks with streamers attached to keep them off,

I often wondered that as I have noticed just recently many wood pigeons in our field. I love the way they waddle about, so slow and laid back.
We have chickweed and clover in the field so perhaps they are doing some pinching out for us.
