| | | Re: Is this a sparrow??? Thanks, I got some photos of starlings at the same time, but they also kept moving so only a couple are nice. I had a few great tits as well, but they also came out blurry. One draw back of digital cameras, they turn themselves off frequently and you have to keep resetting them so you miss the bird while you're messing with the camera! |

Guy | Thanks, I don't know much about Dunnocks. I assumed it was the same as the bird on the feeder as it flew away so I thought it was the same one coming back |

Guy | Must admit that was my thought - until Lucy78green said that the fourth bird was the same on the ground (meaning that too was a sparrow?)

| | | Re: Is this a sparrow??? Thanks all, I'd never really heard of Dunnocks before I decided to do the RSPB birdwatch - there were a few I didn't know. Trouble with their bird identifier is a lot of the colours seem to be exaggerated in the drawings compared to real life, and I can't really get up close for a good view or the all fly away. |

| | | Re: Is this a sparrow??? I also agree that the fourth bird is defo a Dunnock, they are very similar to the House Sparrow apart from their grey breast, we regularly get them in our garden although they don't go on the feeders preferring to fed off the ground. |

| | | Re: Is this a sparrow??? Yes 4 is a Dunnock, they can't grip feeders properly so feed mainly off the ground, though sometimes they 'hover' briefly at a seed feeder. |

| | | Re: Is this a sparrow??? The fundamental difference between a House Sparrow and a Dunnock (Hedge Sparrow) is this: The House Sparrow is a seed eater and member of the weaver family of birds. The Dunnock is a "softbilled" bird which belongs to the accentors The beak shape is totally different in theses two species. House Sparrows have Sead-eating beaks evolved to eat mainly...you guessed it........seeds, like finches. The Dunnock's beak is narrower and more pointed and evolved to eat insects. But true to say that Dunnocks will take seads and Sparrows will eat insects. But the shape of the bill is totally different and they evolved to feed in different ways.
