| | | Willow Warbler? Hello everyone,
I took this snap today, the bird was one of pair. I am pretty sure it is a Willow Warbler but a bit early in the year for them isnt't it, can all you experts just have a quick look and confirm. Any comments about the species being here in February appreciated, possibly over-wintered?
Thanks

| | | Re: Willow Warbler? Pretty sure that's a Chiffchaff. As far as I am aware there is only one overwintering Willow and that's in Cornwall I think. Exteremly unusual for Ws to overwinter, unlike the Chiffchaff, which is now pretty much considered to be a resident species in the south whose populations are boosted by summer migrants.
Cheers,

| | | Re: Willow Warbler? I think I can safely go with Chiffchaff then, we are in Devon by the way, I havn't heard them yet, guess they wont start calling until they establish territories. I was aware that Chiffchaffs over-winter. When I first saw them I was expecting goldcrests, they were in the company of Long Tailed Tits and have often seen those species together. I mist admit at being a bit surprised to see tiny warblers instead. I am going to try for a few better photos tomorrow. As usual the only decent in focus picture today was of a tail and rump! I have the greatest admiration for you out their that get such good shots!

| | | Re: Willow Warbler? We visited our local patch yesterday (Stoke Meadows, north of Guildford), and as we walked along the towpath of the Wey Navigation I noticed something moving in the trees on the opposite bank. My husband was snapping away like mad, but it was too far away to get a really sharp photo of this chiffchaff.

| | | Re: Willow Warbler? Would think its a Chiffchaff Elizabeth, though I'm no expert on these.
Over wintering Willow warblers are extremely rare, and ChiffChaffs are certainly not.
This looks to have the shorter wing feathers of a Chiffchaff too?
Lovely to see though.
I am still dead chuffed we've got one visiting our garden most days this winter.
Ours is a bit easier to see though - its got ONE large white primary feather!
