Yipee a Siskin at last

Hi all.

Just had to tell you that today I had a new garden first. A lovely female Siskin.

Now I'm a quite level headed person I think and it takes a bit to excite me but I was over the moon to see this one today. I've been trying to attract them all winter and today it finally happened

I've posted a couple of shots below and also uploaded a couple of better ones to the main gallery when they are approved.
Roger

Re: Yipee a Siskin at last

Hey Roger well done attracting them to your garden what a lovley suprise for you. Siskins bring some lovely colour to you garden don't they. Excellent pics too.

I don't expect these will be the only two that will visit you, one day I saw a female eyeing up the feeders the next day two males fed from the feeders and they spread the word because they have now taken over my garden with up to 20+ at any one time. The other birds do get a look in about every 20 mins or so. First they feed on the hearts but now they niger, fat and peanuts as well. They boss the other birds too even the bullfinch only stays a short while and now I find they are squabbling a bit between themselves. I can stand right next to where they feed and they just carry on eating and they are a joy to watch.

Looked at all the shots I took John and none of them give a clear enough view to read the ring number.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Hope she tells her friends and they come as well. I started off with just a sigle Goldfinch and I regulary get up to a dozen at a time now so lets hope the Siskin numbers go the same way

It's been a good winter for numbers of Siskin around the London area after last year's Siskin drought!

Very nice shots Roger, I think this might've been a good winter for Siskins, I've certainly seen more than I usually do anyway, they're such pretty little birds!

Great stuff!

I've been lucky enough to see (and photograph) my first garden visit too.

Interesting to note that mine has been around a few times now and has grown into a pair...maybe more to come?

*Edit* Ollie - is that thistle seed they are on? mine have been coming down for sunflower hearts but I don't put out thistle or niger seed. Maybe that would bring more in?

Re: Yipee a Siskin at last

I have had a few garden first this year, I got my first siskins about two weeks ago. The female arrived first, then the male the next day, now they are regulars.

A few weeks back after we had a lot of snow, I got a male bullfinch visited my garden then a couple of days after that a sparrowhawk.

Unfortunatly I've not seen the bullfinch since the sparrowhawks arrival.

Re: Yipee a Siskin at last

there's been a lot of siskins up here all winter .as i drive along the forest roads, about four or five of them fly along in front of the van, stopping now and again to feed on the seeds from cones, blown from the trees, and one or two visit the feeders in the garden. the thing i've noticed recently is the ammount of bullfinches that are around .every where i seem to go i see them , not that i'm complaining, they're lovely little creatures.

That's niger seed they are on Toby, I do have sunflower hearts as well which the Green and Goldfinches seem to love.

Roger, they are great photos. I understand your excitement - I had one on my feeder this morning. This is only the second time I have seen one. The last time was 2 years ago. Unfortunately, it was very misty and I could not get a decent photo
