| | | OK I'm an idiot. How do I correct the title of a Gallery photo? Posted a couple of photos of a very friendly Great Black-backed Gull last night but just realised that I missed out the L of Black. Nobody has noticed it so far, but how do I correct it?
This bird has been visiting my fishing boat off Prawle Point S. Devon for the past 2 years and sits on the foredeck just a couple of feet from where I am working. |

Now i have a pleasant picture in minds eye of a friendly gull ( do not like them as a rule)
So Thanks

| | | Re: OK I'm an idiot. How do I correct the title of a Gallery photo? Hello Annmaria. When we are hauling crabpots we get a variety of gulls coming close to the boat for scraps of old bait. Mostly Herring Gulls but a few other varieties.
Herring Gulls quickly adapt to new sources of food and learn to associate with humans if they don't feel threatened. I suppose that to some people a large bird diving above their heads might feel threatening but I just regard them as friends coming to say hello. Occasionally we have had problems with a rogue gull that steals hats or gives a peck on the top of your head if it feels that it isn't getting it's share of food but that isn't really anything to worry about. When you get to know them you find that they all seem to have different characters. I find that the birds who come very close are actually the more timid birds who get bullied by their fellows so being friendly with people increases their chances of getting fed.
The Great Blackbacked Gulls have a reputation for being fierce bullies amongst other birds and generally keep a bit more distant from people but sometimes one or two will overcome their suspicion of people and realise that 'he who dares gets fed'. Once one bird gets an advantage like this others start to copy the tactic. Both Blackbacks and Herring Gulls seem to enjoy just going for a ride on a boat.
When this particular bird started coming onto the foredeck it acted like a typical Blackback, slow and stupid. Most of the time, even if I threw a bit of fish right at him, the faster Herring Gulls nipped in first; he used to get so angry with them. With time, he wised up and now he can catch a bit of fish in mid air. I am saying 'he' but I don't have any ideal if it is a male or female. Somehow they seem to know the difference but they all look the same to me. |

The best that Iv'e seen was by a Herring Gull, As a Rigger, my mate and I were waiting on the apron down at Dover Docks for the Aquataine to come in( P & O Ferries) It was summer and the sun was hot , we stood outside the van and were people watching , a coach full of football supporters pulled in to a lane over from us and all the guys got out shouting and singing and headed off to the Food Hall down by the berths,
One guy came out with a big massive coke and what looked like a 2 pound burger , he got three feet from the door and!, youv'e guessed it , A Herring gull swooped down and took the whole burger from his hand , the coke went flying and the poor guy ducked like he'd been hit, he recovered enough to shout and swear at the Gull , but I doubt if it could understand him, It flew off with about twenty other gulls in pursuit, We nearly wet ourselves laughing at his antics,

You are a lucky getting so close to get to know them like that ,makes life more interesting. Duncan's story is more how i think of gulls. I saved one on a car park in Blackpool once its wing was dragging so bad ( I think some kids had been mistreating it) I felt awful chasing it round the car park , it must have been in some pain. I threw my coat over it and took it to the vets who had no choice but to put it out of its misery. I think these gulls get a better deal on your boat, thanks for your reply.
