| | | Help Bird ID please I have just joined the forum, I live in North Bristol about half a mile from the Frome Valley Walkway, keen walker and wildlife observer.
Over the past few months I have 2 or 3 sightings of a bird which I cannot identify, it's about the size of pigeon, similarity ends there, its green with off white lower, brown/red flash front to lower back of neck, head appears to be parrot shape, the sound it makes in flight is not like anything else you hear around, so I know when its in the area. I have a poor quality picture which I would have liked to upload, but not sure how to go about on this site which is all very new to me.
PS. tried indentifing it through serveral Gallery forums but no luck.
Hope some of you experts can help, Thanks. |

Must admit the first thing that came to mind when I read your description was a Green Woodpecker. Unmistakable call a bit like someone laughing loudly is the best way I can describe it.

| | | Re: Help Bird ID please I immediately thought Green Woody too until "parrot shaped head" suggested Ring-necked Parakeet.
Here are both .... The RSPB: Green woodpecker The RSPB: Ring-necked parakeet
What do you reckon dogwood? .... any closer to an ID?

| | | Re: Help Bird ID please Thanks Richard,
I think the Woody, interms of colouring, it's just that
head seems different, the parakeet colouring wrong no lower off white colour head similar, my poor quality shot
angle seems more puffin shape with a short bill, which kind of rules out the woody, but it could be down to the poor quailty photo.
I'll see it again sometime, armed with a half decent camera.
Thanks again for your input. |

It may be worth posting even a bad photo for us to look at. |
