Linnets - as promised

Yesterday I asked for ID of a bird in my garden.. I mentioned that there were several coming at the same time andthey have been regular visitors to my arden for a while now. I promised to try and get a better photograph of them and have done so although it meant sitting out in my shed for about 2 hours but at least i was never far from a kettle.

The shots with the birds on a branch was an experiment as i placed the branch on the feeder in the hope that something would land on it.. It paid off to a certain extent I would have liked to have had greenery in the background but due to the location of the shed window I couldn't ..

These pictures are a lot better than the one from yesterday but not quite as good as i was aiming for..
I hope you like them

I have read somewhere that linnets do not normally go to feeders so I am pleased that they have taken a liking to mine

Some nice shots there and what a great bird to have visiting your feeders. As far as I'm aware they aren't a bird that frequents feeders. There are Linnet's in the area I live in but I have never been lucky enough to see one at our feeders.

I don't think I've ever heard of Linnets visiting feeders before. But then again, I remember when it was a rarity for Goldfinches to turn up at feeders and now they seem to do it all the time.

Our local Linnets are summer visitors only. They disappear during the winter months and only return to breed in the spring.

Regards, chris

We get a regular pair drinking/bathing in the stream in the garden but I've certainly never seen one on a feeder. Nice pics by the way

Lovely birds Linnets, i'd love to get them in the garden I think they are pretty much like any other finch and will visit the food source should you be in the area they live in

Re: Linnets - as promised

It seems to look that way, they appear among a flock of goldfinch that calls in so perhaps they are following the goldfinch looking for food source.. I also get about 10 greenfinch appear with the goldfinch.. or is it the goldfinch come in with the greenfinch either way I know its been getting a bit hectic around the feeder at times..

As I am fairly new to all this I would like to ask if I can expect birds to the feeders in the summer. I realise that there are plenty of food sources around then so would expect less.. But I hope that they will not totally stop coming to visit all together..

Pete

Re: Linnets - as promised

We have at least as many in the summer as in the winter, probably more. They have chicks to feed then.

Yes, you are very fortunate having Linnets visiting your feeders. I have seen a photo before of this species visiting feeders, but it's still pretty unusual, but birds change their habits + maybe more will latch on to the freebies available in gardens. Goldfinches have become a common garden bird in last decade or so + are expected to be in the Top 10 for the first time this w/e for the Big Garden Birdwatch.
