Falcated Duck - in Kent

This is one of my favourite ducks the Falcated Duck went to see it today at Southfleet Pond, Southfleet near Gravesend the pond is on New Barn Road if anyones interested...

Anyway showed brilliantly as close as 4 feet ( 120cm if your metric ).

And wasn't Ringed !!!

Hello Dan, probably is an escapee but it's not ringed and i'd say this is the returning bird from last year that showed up at Higham, Shorne and Cliffe Pools anyway cracking bird !!!

Hi Mick. I went to see the Falcated Duck this morning.Never got as close as 4 feet, but had cracking views anyway. Well worth seeing. Not a bird you see everyday,is it?

I popped in to see it yesterday, a very neat little duck I spent most of the time watching a pair of rats climbing a tree!

Re: Falcated Duck - in Kent

This is an escape or suchlike.

As far as I'm aware, the current British List doesn't admit any genuine sightings of wild Falcated Ducks within the UK.

You're correct that at present no birds have been admitted to the A list, because of the problem of escapees. There have been some good candidates + logic says that at least some have been genuine wild birds that have arrived with a carrier species such as Wigeon.

This bird mentioned above showing to 4 feet is unlikely to be a wild bird + certainly wouldn't get accepted, but it's still a very handsome bird worth seeing if you're nearby!

Re: Falcated Duck - in Kent

Have seen a few of these in Britain, but unfortunately none of them have been accepted as truly wild birds. As aeshna points out the likelyhood of escapes are fairly high.
Still a great bird to see.
