Baby Birds

Call me Miss Oblivious, but I've just seen my first baby bird of the year! I'm not counting ducklings and what have you, just garden birds. I was washing up and saw on the grass in front of the house, a baby blackbird being fed by Dad!

Any other sightings?

Re: Baby Birds

That must be nice
The young blackbird was in our garden today, looking rather uncouth!

Re: Baby Birds

How lovely! My glimpses of herons are usually from afar, ordinarily from a train.

Herons usually start breeding early to mid-february, so it's actually pretty late!

Yeah just checked the date on my field notes and it was the 7th. I just remembered being a bit suprised after the survey and checking the breeding dates. I did some heronry watching for a couple of years in south wales and it still seemed early, allowing for 4 weeks inclubation and fledging after forty odd days it seemed pretty tight!!
S/he was still fluffy around the edges with quite a short beak quite stumpy looking all round bless it!

Re: Baby Birds

Our school blue tits hatched over the weekend. Typical, happens when the camera is off!
Out of 13 eggs, 8 hatched. Parents are working their little wings off to feed them. It's great for the children to watch. I made a live mealworm feeding station today so that it gives them a bit more of a chance. Funny--the staff didn't want the mealworms kept in the fridge...wonder why?

I always look forward to seeing the baby moorhens - they're remarkably sweet!

Oh there are no ugly baby birds! Just messes of feathers waiting to become sleek!
