| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 Black Redstart in the garden (Oct 07) First sighting for me and fairly rare. I was lucky enough to have the bird perch on a fence just below my window making it an easy one to photograph. It also appeared in my local paper.
Little Egret (Dec 07) Another first sighting. Impressive looking bird, shooting pretty much blind as the location of the bird was awkward, quite a far away and merged in quite well with the back ground light i had.
GSW (Oct 07) This is are regular GSW posing for the shot. It's so much more confident as time has gone by it's even started chasing off the magpies.
Hopefully my pics will improve. Since those pics I've been learning how to make better use from my equipment and take photography a bit more seriously.
Time and opportunity will tell i guess. Bring on 2008!

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 as you rightly say mick it's certainly a difficult task as i find that my most recent pictures are usually my favourites simply because they are better than anything i have had before as i hope i am getting better ,for instance a few of my shots from this weekend would probably make it into at least two of those places but i decided just to pick one because it took me a while to get one remotely good enough to be satisfied .
anyway the first is of a buzzard sitting on a fence post which was the best i have in the relatively short time i have been taking my photography a bit more seriously
the second is one that i offered up as my bird of the day some time ago purely because i thought it was sometimes overlooked and i was really pleased with the way it turned out
the last one was the aforementioned bird that i had been trying to get a decent picture for some time an uncooperative but well worth waiting for wren
you would not believe how many others i wanted to put in ,of course you would |

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 My selection has to be:
1) Waxwing near Newark. First time I'd seen this gorgeous bird:
2) Wagtail at Thorsby Park. A truly unforgettable experience:
3) Jay at Wollaton Park. Not the first time I'd got a shot of a jay, but the best so far: |

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 The 3 of my best for this year. I only started photography seriously back in September. So I hope to improve over time and get a better camera and lens.
1. A Wheatear taken at Farmoor reservoir. A bit fuzzy but one of my favourite birds.
2. My garden Robin.
3. Although a captive bird I was quite pleased with the pic of a Snowy Owl.

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 Here is my selection of three.
This Blue tit because I just love the pose and lighting on it.
This Robin because I just can't resist Robins and I think it's one of the best I have taken of a Robin
Finally this Wren because of the pose, caught in full voice.

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 This is virtually impossible for me to pick out my favourite three photos as I have been very fortunate this year in being in the right place at the right time and coming away with shots I never thought I would achieve.
If I may I would like to do three of my images taken here in England and three taken abroad.
My first is the lowly Greenfinch but this particular photo I love as it is of a Greenfinch with attitude.
The 2nd is of a Sparrowhawk in my garden. It was a beautiful Autumnal day and the sun was low in the sky, shining straight into the tree in our garden. The colours really come out in this photo and I can't think of a better setting for a Sparrowhawk shot.
The 3rd from these shores is another garden bird. This time the Wren that visits my garden on a daily basis. This time I caught it catching, and eating, its latest meal.
The three from abroad are even harder as my ventures to Lesvos and Spain, together with the 6 day Pelagic in August resulted in photos beyond my wildest dreams but here are just three of the many I could have chosen. I will do one from each vacation.
The 1st is of a Booted Eagle. This was taken on the Huelva central causeway (Sth West Spain) on 04/12/07 and was a real lucky shot. I was watching some waders when I heard a noise behind me. I spun round to see this Booted Eagle being mobbed by a flock of about forty Spotless Starlings. Considering the lack of time I had to compose myself I am quite pleased with the photo.
The 2nd is of a Black Stork taken in Lesvos on 12/05/07. I love this photo because it brings out colours on this bird that you wouldn't think it had.
The 3rd is from the pelagic we went on in August. It is of a Juvenile Gannet in flight. A bird I have always wanted to get a good photo of and I doubt if I could better this one.
I hope you like my choices.

John | Yep, I agree. That Wren shot is one of the best I've ever seen. Yours aren't too shabby either John. |

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 The moorhens are among my favorites as they were taken on my first outing with the bigma.
The swallows because of the action.
And the long tail, just because I like them.

I'm ashamed to upload mine of my bald blue tits!!!
My favourite has to be Johns of the Booted Eagle.
You get a real sense of the event from it, and what a marvellous bird!

BTW thanks for the Booted Eagle comment.

You have to have photos in the gallery already before you can link them to the thread.
Choose the photos you want to link one at a time. Click on each photo thumbnail and when the photo opens up you will see a URL towards the bottom of that photo, with Forum Code written above it. You have to copy that link and paste it into the thread and then go to your next photo and repeat the exercise. You do the same for every photo you want to link to the thread.
Hope that helps.

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 What a truly inspiring selection of photos already chosen! There are quite a number of a amazing photographers here, thank you all for sharing so far
I simply don't know how to choose 3, I adore my photos, even if no-one else does So I had a go at choosing the ones that stick out in my mind the most.
1) Swallow in Flight - I chose this one because I was so pleased to capture a bird in flight, I never expected any I took that day to come out. Especially as the light was definitely waning when I took this. Forgive the sharpening halo, I haven't had time to go back and correct it.
2) Great Spotted Woodpecker: I chose this one because we've had this guy visiting our suet feeder recently. I had been at the window capturing other birds when suddenly he landed on the branch directly in front of me. I couldnt' believe my luck! They're not as sharp as I might've liked, but what can you ask for when taking a photo through a window?
3)Firecrest - I chose this one, not because it's a good photo as it isn't, but because I did not expect to see this bird. I know they're not especially easy to spot, and they're super fast. The lighting was pretty much gone when I took this, which explains why it's so dark and noisy, but I'm absurdly pleased with the capture anyway

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 Some beautiful shots there folks. I'm particularly jealous of Graham's Jay as it's currently top of my "wanted" list, and despite the woods round here positively heaving with them I still haven't got a clear shot of one.
Like others I'm finding it very hard to pick just three and in the end have gone for three birds that I hadn't even seen before this year...
1. Avocet at Minsmere. Such a graceful bird that I've always been fascinated by since hearing that they had returned to Britain when I was a nipper. I can't believe that I waited til this year to make the effort to go and see them...
2. Bearded Tit at Oare Marshes. I told Dan Salter weeks ago that I would post this pic as Oare is his local patch, so apologies to Dan that it's taken me so long...
3. Kingfisher on the Thames at Crossness. I love this one because, unlike the previous two, I hadn't gone looking for it. It was a lovely surprise...
Here's to an even better 2008!
Dave P.

| | | Re: 3 Of Your Best - 2007 well my camera isn't really man enough for most bird shots....
But I quite like these three:
Yes ok.... a captive - non-native bird but I like the posture and composition.
Again.... a captive bird but I love the way this photo has ended up looking more like a painting and ok, some might think this is a bit dark and may not like that the bird is looking away- and maybe I should clone out the blade of grass on the breast feathers. But I love the subtle lighting the way it highlights the cheek and eye and the stray grass makes it feel more real to me ...
I have come to terms with the fact that what I like in a photograph may not be the same as what most people like, but I'm ok with that!!
