Re: four more....

Ok let’s have a go

Pic 1. Bewick’s Swans – to much black on the beaks to be Whooper’s
Now the Gull - not so sure of this one, but I will plump for Glaucous Gull. Why well first it has white wing tips so has to be one of four, Ivory, Mediterranean, Glaucous or Iceland. General build and bill shape rule out Ivory and lack of black on head rules out Med Gull. The dirty brown on the plumage tells us this is a young bird, I would plum for 2nd winter as I think a 1st winter bird would be darker plumaged. Although we cannot tell size from this shot it does seem to be a large heavy built bird which leans towards Glaucous. If we look at the beak it seems quit long and well defined yellow with a black tip, I think Iceland would have shorter darker bill with the dark tip blurring into the lighter base.

Pic 2. I think this is a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker - looking at its size in relation to the Alder cones it does not seem large enough for Greater Spotted, also the beak looks to short and delicate for the latter species, if it was a juvenile Greater (adults have a black crown) I think we would see a lot more white on the forehead but the clincher for me is the streaking on the breast and flanks these are not present on greater spotted.

Pic 3. 1st winter Little Gull – small mostly black beak, head pattern, pale grey neck and white trailing edge to wing rule out Black-headed Gull and upper wing pattern rules out 1st winter Kittiwake.

Pic 4. Little Stint – always a little uneasy about identifying waders but short tail, dark legs and short straight dark bill about does it I think

I hope the working out helps those who wonder why I made the choices I did, and helps those with more knowledge than me can more precise when shooting me down.

I like that you've shown the thought process involved Ferret and wish I'd done the same - so with that in mind I'll explain now in case it helps anyone else!

1. Its a 1st winter of either glaucous or iceland and possibly I thought it was far enough in distance from the Bewicks to make it a smaller bird - plus the thought that bewicks are that much smaller than whooper. I must admit tho its feet look big, but its wing tips maybe finer pointed and wings slimmer tho from this pic its hard to tell (yeah I know thats the idea!) The head appears 'cleaner' looking - glaucous have more marking tho that's subjective!

2. Is a juv gt spotted - and wonderfully misleading with those cones! But it has a black rim/stripe below red head which lesser never has. Its interesting that its breast is so streaky and poss reddish bringing syrian woodpecker to mind - but I'm assuming we're staying british on this site/thread?!!

3. Is 1st winter little gull showing diagnostic head pattern, dark patch at under base of wing and grey/faint band on outer upper wing and most importantly needle sharp black beak. Bh has flesh to pale orange beak with black tip.

4. Is little stint (and I did have to think about this) I can tell its small but the most obvious character I look for is not obvious - the stripes on its back, so the clincher is black legs! And short straightish black beak!

There goes (and I bet its a glaucous at the finish)

Pauline
