Unknown wader

Hi all,

This is my first post so I am hoping that I have done it correctly
Went to Cley this weekend and saw this bird amongst the lapwing, can anyone tell me what it is please?

Sorry it's not the best image in the world, but hopefully it's good enough for someone to be able to recognise.

Hi John, welcome to WAB. Your wader is a Redshank.

I thought that too, but was too scared to suggest it in case I was wrong.

I've made quite a few "duff calls" in my time, but, hey thats life.

As it was you would have been right.

Re: Unknown wader

Thanks for that Paul,

I have seen lots of Redshank, or at least what I have been calling Redshank, usually wasing they always looked slimmer with longer beaks. Like this one, is this a Redshank too?

Again apologies for the quality

Gosh,

You guys are certainly fast at replying. I discover no sooner have I made my reply than it's out of date!

Thanks for the ID, a ruff is a new one for me. Cheers.

Re: Unknown wader

I took a group to Titchwell yesterday where we had 43 Ruff, which must have been one of the largest winter flocks I've seen. In fact there were more Spotted Redshank (11 recorded in book, we saw c6) than Common Redshank- only 2!

Re: Unknown wader

The 2 ways i i.d ruff is that the feathers on the back are very "Turtle dove" and also as they angle down toward the tail they are very prone to being fluffed up and scruffy by the slightest wind...making them look a bit "ruff" ( i know this name comes from the summer neck plumage but its a handy help)

Re: Unknown wader

Brilliant post Dan, just what forums are all about in my oppinion. Just been down to Langstone Harbour and amoungst others there were redshanks or were they ruffs? Tide well out and so the waders are a fair distance away, I'm using 8x bins so I can't get a real detailed look, but red legs and very still feathers despite a strong breeze therefore I strongly suspect redshank.

ChrisG
redshank have a much longer bill and are somehow more delicate in form I think.
