| | | Re: duck id this is a domestic duck, descended from mallard stock. It looks stockier in build so probably a table breed. |

| | | Re: duck id This is definitely a mallard cross domestic breed, probably a pond duck.
The local RSPB reserve has several, mostly crossed with a muscovi drake that has made a home there and rapes every wild duck it can get hold of,
the wild drakes don`t have a chane against this monster, I asked the warden if I could shoot him and his offspring, in order to return the reserve to wild pure bred species, he said he couldn`t sanction that, so I guess he`ll finish up with a reserve full of Xbred ducks as the offspring drakes are nearly as big as their father.
Does anyone know the official RSPB line about keeping breeds pure??

| | | Re: duck id I don't think the RSPB has much interest in domestic ducks such as muscovy or domestic mallard derived breeds as they tend to be concerned with wildbirds - these other birds are almost livestock really. |

Tony A. | I'm not sure if muscovy mallard hybrid are fertile or not? Otherwise all of the other duck are likely to only mate with other mallards as they are the same species. I think its a case of in urban areas in particular the horse has not only bolted but is several counties away when it comes to original mallards but I don't think its so much of a problem further out - though I could be wrong. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
