| | | Noise in the Wood Today I went for a walk in my local patch where i saw loads of different species from sparrowhawk's to Greater spotted woodpecker's, from a Roe deer to a Stoat. It was perhaps one of the afternoon's in the country ive had for quite a wile. Anyway getting to the point there was a bird about the size of a big pigeon rite up in the canopy, the best view i got was it flying from tree to tree, just a silhouette though from what i saw had fairly roundish wings (was a very quick glimpse though). It made the worst noise, a screeching noise something like WWWWWaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAA, almost like a scream, was very course, sometimes it would be very rapid getting high pitched. I just couldn't get a better look at it. Also it's scream was nothing like a barn owl more like a weird crow noise. Whilst this was going on the was a very distant sound that went something like wwwwwooooooooooww. Although two separate species two noise's iv never heard up there and im up there at least 3 times a week.
Any idea's cheers

| | | Re: Noize n the Wood I'd agree with Jay on the first one. They are very vocal. The second maybe Tawny Owl? Although I'm sure you've heard them before. I heard both when I was out yesterday.

| | | Re: Noize n the Wood Both Jay's and Tawny's are present in the wood's ive just never heard them making these call's before, incidentally i did hear a Tawny today too. Cheer's for the help after listening on the net, pretty sure the first was a jay. There is a large population of tawny owls in them wood's so yes that's probably rite too. Chance's are iv heard these call's just been so busy rummaging in the undergrowth for creepy crawlies they gone straight over my head.

| | | Re: Noise in the Wood Nice one. Had a feeling that may be what you heard
If as you say the call was distant, perhaps its attempting to establish a territory on the edge of the Tawny`s turf. The two species are noted as being a bit intolerant of each other from what I`ve read...

| | | Re: Noise in the Wood We get barn Owls, on the edge of the wood recently seen in the wood, plenty of Tawny's, never seen a Long eared but i know the sound and that was it in your link, how big are these territory's? how likely is it that they will tolerate each other, presume tawny's being bigger would have the upperhand.

| | | Re: Noise in the Wood I`m not sure of territory sizes Dogghound, but I do know that if Tawnys move into an area used by Long Eareds, its said that the latter can forced out.Similarly, a Long Eared trying to encroach on a Tawny`s established territory will often be seen off.Occasionally both species will be more tolerant of each other though, which may be the case where you are.
Theres a chance though, that your owl could just be moving around attempting to establish a breeding territory and find a mate. It`ll be interesting to hear whether it sticks around or moves on.

Mark H | I will keep you posted. It is a large area of woodland and has a very good small mammal population present, so plenty of food for them.

| | | Re: Noise in the Wood Was it in an area for Goshawk? Just an idea that may be feasible considering the sound you described. Sort of a 'W W W W W W' followed by a screeching end note. Check the sound out anyway. Just an idea. |
