Is it unusual

For Wrens to visit and actually eat from a bird table. I ask the question because several times this week we have had a Wren visit our feeding station. The first time I spotted it he/she just sat on the branches above the feeders looking down on what was on offer. This happened several times then yesterday it actually dropped down onto the smallest table grabbed something and was off.

There is Robin mix, mixed seed, sunflower hearts, niger seed and suet based insect pellets on the table it visited but I could not make out which it took.

I did manage a photo of it before it dropped onto the table which I have posted below. Would be interested if anyone else gets Wrens visiting and actually eating from a table.

Roger

Re: Is it unusual

I have a Wren visit my bird table. I think it would be looking for small insects and spiders rather than seed etc? Although in cold weather would probably take small seed.

We get a Wren as far as our Bird bath, but never on the feeders or anyway near the table. Lucky you Roger!

Re: Is it unusual

I often hear a pair of Wren's in the bottom of my garden early in the morning..They seem to hang around the wood pile hunting for spider's ..When they do come up near the feeding stations they just seem to hop around the tree branches..only once have i ever seen them on the bird table when nobody else is around...

Great photo by the way..

Re: Is it unusual

Stunning photo roger. I'm well impressed with that image.

I do on the odd occasion get Wrens visit one of my tables. As this particular table is positioned under a tree I wonder if any insects have dropped onto it from above. That might explain why the Wren goes onto it.

Re: Is it unusual

Thanks for the replies everyone, seems as though there are a few Wrens visit tables. I will carry on putting the suet based insect pellets out and see if I can get a photo of it actually picking anything up.

Re: Is it unusual

I've never seen it myself, but I guess that if they're struggling to find food they may visit. Apparently they like grated cheese and you can feed them by sprinkling it under low bushes, but this could be dangerous if you have cats in the area!

Hi Guy, I wouldn't have thought they were struggling to find food yet but your reply reminded me that I put some grated cheese out for the Robins on that same table a few days ago. I thought it had all been eaten but would guess there are a few morsels left.

Certainly too many cats round us to risk scattering on the floor but my Airedale does a pretty decent job of scaring them. He sits on a hard chair in front of the window where the feeders are and gives any cats a telling off that venture into the garden.

Re: Is it unusual

At one time I would have said very unusual but sometimes, in some places wrens are much less shy than one expect. I've seen them picking up crumbs in Holland Park in the way that sparrows used .... in the days when we had sparrows by the hundred. I wonder if there's any connection - do the wrens just have less competition now? Are they adapting to a new niche?

Could easily be the case Paul. Wrens are after all one of if not the commonest British bird, although they are not the most seen. There is certainly a healthy population of them in my area and the ones that visit my garden seem pretty confident.
