Male Ruff, moulting into winter plumage. They can be very variable.

Male Ruff in moult, which would have had a white ruff. The ruffs come in a variety of colours and apparently the darker the ruff, the more successfull the bird is with the Reeves (female Ruffs), so your poor chap is a bit of an also-ran in that department.
