Common Buzzard Identification

Hi all took this earlier this afternoon. Think it may be a Common Buzzard, but am not familiar with the birds of prey. If someone could give a positive Id I will then post it in the gallery.
Thanks
Ollie

Re: ID required

Hi Ollie,

Certainly looks like a Common Buzzard to me. This is a great shot - it looks like you were pretty close. Were you in a hide?

Re: ID required

Thanks for the comments Matt and Alan. It was taken at Messingham nature reserve. on the edge of the conifer woods. Spotted as walking round the reserve so when I got a bit nearer went down on hands and knees behind some reed beds until I got near enough for a few shots. You should see the state of my trousers. Will post in gallery later but got to get my tea at moment.
Thanks Ollie

Hi Ollie

That is an excellent photo of a Buzzard. It might be me but I think it would be better with the trr trunk cropped out of the image as it is a bit bright. For me it tends to take the eye away from the image.

I have had a go at it myself. See what you think.

John

Re: ID required

I quite like the tree being there John, gives a sense of the habitat, but I suppose it does block the Buzzards gaze. If you were going to crop the image more, I think it would be better to take the tree out completely like below.

ps hope you dont mind us messing with your image Ollie!

Hi John
Think you are right about cropping the trunk out. Only got photoshop Elements 4 last week and am still inexperienced with using it. Come to that I have only been taking bird photos about three months was more used to taking macro and lanscape stuff with the old Canon S2IS, so I am on a learning curve.
Cheers
Ollie

Hi Alan
Both yours and John's edit look better than mine. Only got photoshop Elements 4 last week and am still inexperienced with using it. Come to that I have only been taking bird photos about three months was more used to taking macro and lanscape stuff with the old Canon S2IS, so I am on a learning curve.

No problem at all with anyone editing any image of mine. I have several more of the buzzard one with the head looking straight on at you, but didn't post it as thought it was too similar
Cheers
Ollie

I did one image with the trunk completely out but it was a really small file and I wasn't sure how it would look once uploaded so I kept a bit of trunk in, got a larger file and tried that.

I must admit that I do prefer it with the trunk completely out myself.

Whichever way you look at it, it is an excellent shot of the Buzzard.

John

Instead of cropping out the trunk completely, which as you say would make the image too small, I cloned the trunk out instead! Ah the wonders of Photoshop

An it certainly is a wonderful shot - and makes it all the more memorable for Ollie, because of the manner in which he captured it!

Alas I didn't have the time to do that as I had to go out for just over an hour but that was the sensible way of doing it.
