Which fruit would you suggest I put on my bird table.

I would like to offer the wild birds some fruit and ideally the best place would be on the bird table. Have you any suggestions which type of fruit they will be tempted by. I have seen fruit offered when I have been in bird hides but I've been so busy taking shots I forgot to look what fruit was there. Thankyou

Have a look at http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...mage-3812.html
Mind you, to use that lot would cost a fortune!

Too right it would, and I wouldn't want that big magpie to scare of the woodpecker if it ever returns would I, still I think it has now gone to pastures new. I shall start with an apple cut up, or maybe half an apple and then it would last two days but there again a quarter of one and last four days. I think I can just about afford that

We usually put any old apples out for the blackbirds, we put them on the floor rather than the table

Barbara, also try a few soaked sultanas or raisins and anything that has 'gone over' and is no longer suitable for the humans in the household. Never offer dessicated coconut but fresh should be OK. I am sure you will soon find what the local birds prefer.

How about strawberries? And it's not even Wimbledon fortnight (although we've had enough rain!)

Right thanks for that yellowbelly, I will try that because we get quite a few blackbirds.

Re: Which fruit would you suggest I put on my bird table.

I put out apple, cut up strawberry, banana sliced crossways still in its skin sometimes it is eaten other times not, apple always and the fat blocks with fruit are popular here
(the ones with insects are favourite though)
I put out small amounts until it is obvious wether or not it will be eaten the rest of the fruit is mine! small amounts will be good for insects if allowed to ferment quietly in a corner

Thanks wildone, I heard about never offering dessicated coconut before, luckily. But I will try the soaked sultanas and raisins, but I'm glad you told me to soak them first because I would have put them out straight from the packet

Now you are talking carlj, if I was offered strawberries everyday, I might just come back as a bird myself, especially if they were scottish strawberries they are delicious

Wow nightshade, your birds are well fed. Thanks for all the tips and that goes for everybody else too. I bought some apples today but I'll have to wait for them to soften, but I'm sure they will enjoy them eventually must remember to add bananas to my shopping list (even though I can't stand the smell of them)

Yes I quite agree carlj, ours are lovely, we have wild ones at the back of the garden they run everywhere but have not been too intrusive, never tried them though, I guess in the past the wild birds have been feeding on them, I hope so

We put out old apples which,as already said, the Blackbirds love.

Also we put out red and green grape left overs which the Starlings seem to go mad for......then again Starlings seem to go mad over anything.

You have certainly had more success than me and in such a short time.

hmmmm, all this lovely fruit mark, there must be a lot a healthy birds out there. When I think back, I can't believe all the old fruit I have binned and not put it to good use instead. With the grapes it will more likely be a case of ... three for me, one for you, four for me, one for you, and that goes for the strawbs too

We put out apples on the table and the ground and they always get eaten by the blackbirds, robins and starlings.
