Smile swallows

Are you all still seeing Swallows,
I thought they should be off by now?
I'm not complaining mind and always feel sad
when the sky's are quite in the evening.

Can't recall seeing any today, but can definitely remember seeing a few last Tuesday. Expect they are the same as most migrants and you will always get a few that are late leaving.

Re: swallows

Of my local Swallows, there were still four late this afternoon. Many though have gone, as there were 32 last week. Our local House Martins are still about, but the Swifts left early this year, leaving on the 10th August.

Re: swallows

I have had Swallows as late as Mid-November on a few occasions myself but I remember reports of Swallows near Cromer last year almost right up to Christmas. I think there were others reported elsewhere around that time as well.

If my memory serves me right I think there were infrequent reports of House martins around that time also.

Re: swallows

I hadn't seen any for a while until earlier today, when there was a small flock feeding above the house. It's nice to still have them around.

Re: swallows

Swallows still passing thru down here, should still be moving thru albeit in smaller numbers into October. Most local breeders have left but still a few around.

Re: swallows

The number of swallows generally has been down in my area this year, but the ones we do have show no signs of budging.

Re: swallows

Watched a small group of 4 Swallows and 2 House Martins last evening when suddenly there were 18 to 20 birds. Again more Swallows than Martins but about the same ratio of twice as many Swallow to Martins. Still flying as I left the area at about 6.30pm.

Re: swallows

We still have a few Swallows around here especially near the farm. There's a pair of House Martins across the road from my work who are still feeding young is this usual? The Swifts left early this year too with my last sighting being on the 17th August.

Re: swallows

I have just had six Swallows fly over my house here in Coventry plus the four House Martins that have stayed faithful to this road are still here.

Twenty or so Swallows and about ten House Martins (and a Dipper passing!) over the house (S. Pennines) this evening.

Re: swallows

Been to Old Moor RSPB in South Yorkshire today, and saw 20+ Swallows & 50+ House Martins and a few Sand Martins, so they are still around.

Re: swallows

I started off at Kilnsea (Spurn) today and there were masses of Swallow and House Martin. Far too many to even contemplate counting.

Re: swallows

Saw four Swallows today, heading south across the top of Black Hill in the northern Peak District. This is a terribly exposed and wild upland site and they seemed to be struggling in the wind. You'd've thought they would've picked an easier route!

Re: swallows

Some big movements over London today, though the star birds were probably the Spotted Crake that's been in Ingrebourne Valley for 3 or so days + a Richard's Pipit on Wormwood Scrubs (2nd record here).

Re: swallows

No sign of Swallows or Martins at Gault Wood today where I had seen a flock last evening. Did manage the small family group at Eldernell on the Nene Washes though.

I noted that they thought it was a tawny Pipit first. Nice bird to have in London.

Yes I noticed that. There are a couple of guys who regularly work the Scrubs- a place I learnt my common warbler songs as a teenager. One of them , David Lindo, does some TV work on the One Show (have to admit I've never watched it!), + he's a pretty good birder.
