jen xxx | Ill give you the top 3 - this i DO know from memory, but had to get the stats from wikipedia:
1.Ostrich (from africa) upto 9ft tall
2.Emu (from Australia) upto 6.5ft tall
3.Rhea (From South America) - the tallest specis is 5.6ft
The fairly recently extinct giant Moa from New Zealand got to 10ft tall!
And if you go back a little further the elephant bird was over 10ft tall and nearly weighed half a ton.
And one of my favourite prehistoric groups, the phorshuracids from South and later North America, were large preadtory birds often over 6ft and top predators in South america until they joined at panama and the sabre tooth cats arrived. One of the last surviving (about 3million years ago I think) was Titanis and this got to over 3m (10ft) tall and would have ate you for breakfast no problem. No need for wiki for that last paragraph - had to write a 3000 word essay on them at uni |

| | | Re: largest bird Whooper Swan at their largest is comparable to White-tailed Eagle at their largest. 243cm (WS) 245cm (WTE).
The Mute Swan at its largest comes in at 238cm.
The Great Bustard is the largest with a wing span up to 260cm and the Common Crane come in at 230cm.
So by a fraction the WTE is the largest (as you can't really count the Great Bustard yet IMHO).

John | Out of interest where did u get your figures from. Im not saying your wrong. Its always fun to see the different figures quoted in different places - even sometimes in scientific literature! I got mine from RSPB complete Birds of Britain and Europe by Rob Hume. |
