| | | Three eggs found. I was surprised at the size of these eggs. They are 1.75 inches - 4.5 cm long. They are pale blue in colour, and nearly unspotted. They had been opened - looked like the chick had emerged from the side rather than the end. They were lying close together under a large oak tree.
you can see an image on http://basilisk.co.uk/various/blueEgg.jpg
Anyone has any suggestions on identification? |

| | | Re: Three eggs found. Possibly snake eggs? don't think it's bird eggs, they seem a bit too rounded, birds don't usually hatch from the side and they usually make a neater break, plus they were on the ground |

Sounds close, though the dimensions on the BTO website are 41x29 - this is a little bit longer and quite a lot wider. Wikipedia says that the eggs are white, and the clutch size is two (BTO also says two) and I found three - there could have been more. |

Is it possible these eggs have been predated, looking at how they have been opened? Cheers

They looked like they must have dropped from the same nest. I guess the damage might be consistent with a crow or something, but I would imagine that a bird or squirrel might have carried them away from the nest, once they had made a hole, rather than just dropping them?
If it helps, they were found two or three miles south of Newbury, just off the A34.
I am working on a theory... I will post tomorrow. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
