Re: great bird id game

I had a quick go before going to work on the advanced level. I did to the end of level four and scored 1616. I got the Siberian Jay wrong (but that's no surprise as I have never seen one) and got the Little Auk at the 2nd attempt.

I will have a go tonight at going further.

John

Re: great bird id game

Not that many questions asked. I think it would have been better say out of a 100. I seemed to get the ones wrong I shouldn't have! Like awkward shots of bramblings. Also spelling mistakes don't help!

First attempt at experienced level: 1122, second attempt: 2155.

I suppose it's luck which questions your asked. Good fun though.

I got 1751. Waders are my downfall. Not too hot on ducks either. But hey...what a fun way to learn. Cheers. ww Ps juvenile gulls are not easy either.

Re: great bird id game

I managed 2017 on expert but some of the images are virtually impossible to fathom out. There was an out of focus Bar-tailed Lark that was also grey, not the usual colour you would expect. A Little Bittern in flight looking from the back with just an edge of the wing seen. A Spur winged Plover in flight that at the angle shown could have been anything, so in the end it wasn't too bad a score.

Did the game give you the option to use the telecopes, sometimes it does which gives you a clearer view, however if you then get it correct you get less points.

I didn't see any options other than you had to name the bird. Each one you got wrong you lost points.

One of my earlier attempts even had a dark blob on the side of a cliff face that was a Brunnich's Guillemot. Now that was stretching the imagination a bit but I suppose you could have had a lucky guess. I doubt if anyone would have known exactly what that bird was unless you were actually at a certain location and knew what you were looking for.

If there is a choice of views John, it's shown in the extra tab at the top of the photo;- see the attachment.

Choosing the telescope option will also lose you points!

I must admit that I hadn't used those options. I used the scope twice this time and got my Expert score up to 2268. I dropped some silly points though. There was a Tawny Pipit way out of habitat that I was IDing as a Pipit but didn't think it was a Tawny.

Oh well, it's a good exercise and I have bookmarked the page to keep trying.

I suppose the one I enjoyed getting the most without dropping a point was the Short toed Lark. That was a good one to work out.

John

Just keep practising carl. Have you got a decent field guide? If so just study the birds against the field guide. I have been ID'ing birds I have never seen, or likely to see, by using my field guide.

It's great fun and really does test you.

John
