Pocket size bird guide?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a pocket size guide to british birds, but can't seem to find a decent one particularly looking for one that has the wading/sea type species as it's these i most struggle with, which is strange considering i live on the coast

Could anybody recommend one that i could take out in the field with me?

John

Re: Pocket size bird guide?

Well...EVERYONE is going to say COLLINS COLLINS COLLINS bird guide and yes it totally is the BIBLE of birding and has all the detail and info anyone could want...Its also BIG and SO NOT pocket sized so mine stays at home ...on days out i take the "rspb pocket birds (Johnathan Elphick and John Woodward)" ..its pocket sized and a photo guide, and so user friendly it hurts...
Has comparison size drawings, in flight and wing pattern drawings and another nice feature along with the usual songs and calls and distribution is that it links you to other possible species ( always handy if your not sure)

Your other comment...unless you have bought a specialist guide on say birds of prey i think it very unlikely a guide will miss out a whole group like sea/coastal birds.

Dan
p.s. I seem to remember seeing a new pocket sized guide coming out or maybe out already ...may well have been a pocket version of collins which would be cool

Cheers I do have the Collins guide, but it's far to big to be lugging around all day I'll check out the RSPB one

One of the best and the one I use is the Kingfisher 'Field Guide to the Birds of Britain & Ireland' Excellent book pocket size, it list the 255 species that you are likely to see in the UK. Done to earth book with excellet illustrations. Its one of the very few field guides that does not carry the word 'Europe' in its title!

Re: Pocket size bird guide?

The Mitchell Beazely is certainly the smallest pocket type book I know of + though it's not in the same league as the Collins Bird Guide, it's a pretty good book.

The companion volume on butterflies is pretty good to fit in the pocket for any European trips you might go on.

If you are geeky like me, then get the RSPB guide
elelctronic version for PDA - comes bundled with the
PC version.

amazing what it has, including 270 odd songs and voices.

I hae it on my phone!

Ahhh you took my advice..I think its a great little book, user friendly...all the relevant data and like i said..the "other possible species" links are great !...well done.

Granted its not collins but it also doesnt way the same as a house brick.

It's a nice size to take out and keep in the car for emergencies like i say i've had the Collins one for a while but it's to big to take out every time you go anywhere.

Thanks to everyone who replied
