| | | Hawfinch ? Is it possible that I may have seen a Hawfinch in my garden? It was early morning first week of August this year perched at the very top of a large hawthorn tree at the bottom of the garden. I told myself it couldnt be a Hawfinch because they are rather elusive and not very common? I don't have a photo but would love to know if any bird watchers know of any Hawfinch sightings in this area around that time? |

| | | Re: Hawfinch ? Not an easy species to see, tend to keep high in trees & are quite elusive. Although will occaisionaly visit gardens. Can be seen in Blenheim Park in winter in Oxfordshire. If it was one, great. Cheers

| | | Re: Hawfinch ? It's certainly possible, but as the others have said they aren't common + can be elusive- just frustrating you'll not know for sure whether it was or not. If it was it may return if you're lucky.
In parts of eastern Europe they are pretty common + can regularly be seen in gardens where there are many trees. |

| | | Re: Hawfinch ? Yes it looked very much like the photo! Funny enough I too thought it might be an escapee from someones' avery! Been onto the RSPB/BTO birdtrack site and there is one recording (red dot on map!) of a Hawfinch in the first week of August which looks pretty close to where I live. Am going to let myself believe is was one! No sign since I'm afraid, I have looked everyday hoping to get a photo. Thanks everyone |

Thanks everyone | It might be worth reporting it to your county bird recorder as a possible sighting.

Can give better directions if you are going. |
