This year a pair (I presume the same pair that I watched yesterday) have been active for the past ten days or so, in our garden. They were investigating a shrubby conifer in front of our house (it's much beloved by the local birds and currently has a pair of dunnocks nesting inside it) for a couple of days. The female bullfinch was taking nesting material into the bush a lot. But they gave up after a day - the dunnocks won. That was about a week ago....
We thought the bullfinches had left, but then I saw them yesterday. I have never seen a bullfinch on the ground either. The male first flew onto the ground and sort of hopped / flew (a jumpy kind of movement) along the ground, stopping off at the dandelion seed heads and pulling at them. I watched him closely, as he ate the seeds. I called my husband to watch as well, and he observed it all too.
I was so surprised about what I'd seen that I googled the key words and this thread came up (several years old). |

| | | Re: Unusual Bullfinch behavour? A couple of Summers ago, I saw around a dozen Bullfinches on the ground in Monsal Dale. Part of the dale is quite open and is left to grow wild (or used to be), so along with other wildflowers there were hundreds of dandelions going to seed.
From a distance, I wasn't sure what they were at first....but the closer I got, the more I could see their vivid colours standing out amongst the yellow buttercups.
I got as close as I dare without disturbing them and just watched them stripping the seeds.
It was one of those 'never forget' sights.
