| | | Golden Eagle This is sad ...
One half of a rare breeding pair of golden eagles has been killed by poison in the Scottish Borders.
The bird was found on Sunday and tests have confirmed that the banned substance carbofuran was involved.
An investigation was launched by police and wildlife charities after the eagle was found on a grouse moor in the Borders.
The Scottish RSPB has offered a reward of £1,000 to anyone who can help provide information about the case. BBC NEWS | Scotland | South of Scotland | Illegal poison kills golden eagle

| | | Re: Golden Eagle That is such terrible news. We were in the lakes at the Golden Eagle observation point last month to see Englands only Golden Eagle - a male (we didn't get to see it). The RSPB chap there said it was hoped that a female would find her way from Scotland as the male had quite a few breeding years left. With the loss of one of the Borders only breeding pair, this chance must have been greatly diminished. An absolute waste and very upsetting to hear. |

| | | Re: Golden Eagle No way!
I was at the hide in the lakes at the same time as Bambi and Goosey and we were all hoping for a glimpse of the Golden Eagle (and that one day it could find a mate - even less chance of that now!). I'm so sad at this tragic event. I hope they catch the mindless idiots responsible

| | | Re: Golden Eagle It's a disgrace, I'm appalled but not shocked. Poisoning raptors is still a problem. On the one hand there are people trying to help them and on the other hand people going out of their way to persecute them. Tough tactics are needed to protect these magnificent birds. In some countries poachers and the like are shot on sight. I know that would never happen here but I can't say I disagree with it. |

| | | Re: Golden Eagle Golden Eagles are magnificent birds that I never tire of seeing in Scotland each year.
It is disgraceful that such persecution still continues, particularly so in this case where there was only 1 breeding pair in the Borders.
I still believe that the penalties (if offenders are ever caught) are insignificant and certainly don't act as a deterrent.

They have to be locked up, or hung up.
