| | | The nature of nature I've just been reading Beryl's account of the dead swan and fully appreciate her distress having come across a similar incident last year on a canal bank near Bridgewater. We assumed a fox was responsible because of all the feathers which remained.
We marvel at owls when we see them - forgetting that they kill mice and other small creatures to survive; likewise badgers eat hedgehogs as hedgehogs eat frogs and snakes. etc. Sadly the killing of one species by another is the nature of nature. |

| | | Re: The nature of nature Yes. I do appreciate this too. And we are also responsible for killing.
It's just a little harder when you see it for real. I love foxes and the fox (if) that took the baby swan was probably hungry and I know we also build on what was originally their home ground . I do agree with you about The nature of nature. It's a cycle. It just hurts to see it when it happens.
If on the other hand it was a dog and the RSPCA said it might well have been, then the owner of the dog is to blame for lack of control.

As for the foxes unfortunately there's not much you can do about it it's nature, as much as I love the foxes it always upsets me deeply to see them with a frightened squealing rabbit in their jaws but as I said it's nature and they've got to do that to survive.I'm so sorry about your poor swan it must have been really upsetting for you and the other swan. | | | Re: The nature of nature I back Beryl in this.We actually dont think it was a fox they are not seen in that paticular area whereas there are a lot of dogwalkers,Most whos dogs are off the lead like a swim and are very good. But there are just a couple of dog owners that go there that dont pick up after their dogs and Beryl herself came across a man actively encouraging his dog to go for the swans and other birds. She had words with him. Most of the dogs that walk there love to splash in the water and most of the owners call them back when necessary and i would hate to take away any right of the dogs that have fun and do no harm, but as always in life you get the odd one who spoils it for the rest because they think its funny to goad the dog into killing |

| | | Re: The nature of nature Trentham Gardens has a strict lead policy - deer, herons and otters (which I have yet to encounter) are all within the grounds. Yet very few dog owners actually obey that. At the end of the day, it's not the dogs, but the minority of owners. |

I feel sad for dogs that have to be put down due to lake of responsibility of the owner |

At the end of the day, it's not the dogs, but the minority of owners. | I understand within grounds of parks etc that is right but this is open land.Dogs are banned from the beaches here in the summer seasson but this is just a nature footpath and has been used for many years by dog owners myself included.I believe dogs have a right to have a run and a swim as long as the owners conrol them and not encourage them to chase the birds .You just get the odd ****** s (excuse my french even if its starred lol) that dont When the tide is out you can walk miles over the cockle sands and the birds are way off and there are lots of shallow pools which the dogs love. There would be uproar in this town if that was to stop.It is a public place and Exmouth has a lot of retired people who love to take their dogs along the estuary and have done for many years and very rarely does this sort of thing happen |
