| | | Strange behaviour ?? A few years ago whilst birding along the Thames in Oxfordshire. I saw a Kestrel repeatedly diving on something in the middle of the river. As I got closer I realised the potential prey was a Robin that was floating on its back in the river with its wings spread. Each time the Kestrel dived towards it the Robin would raise its legs in a gesture of self defence. I don’t think this action was a deterrent for the Kestrel, but probably the proximity of water was. As I came opposite this bizarre sight the Kestrel flew off due to my presence, then much to my surprise the Robin flipped over onto its front and flew off to some nearby bushes presumably to dry off and compose itself after such an ordeal. Just like to share this observation. Cheers |

| | | Re: Strange behaviour ?? Very interesting behaviour. I find it interesting that the robin managed to fly away safely, I'd always thought that small birds that fell into water were doomed unless they could find somewhere to hop out, it's good to know they can survive it.

| | | Re: Strange behaviour ?? I can only assume the Robin did not become too waterlogged and was still dry and light enough to fly off. Also I wonder if the Robin chose or had no option but to drop into the water to evade the Kestrel ?

| | | Re: Strange behaviour ?? I have watched a robin along the canal eating insects off the surface, it was good to watch as he looked like a cross between a kingfisher and a humming bird | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
