| | | Catch the Pigeon!!!! Our son James came into my bedroom thismorning to announce there was a pigeon in the living room!!!! Of course I didn't believe him at first, but after prizing myself out of my bed and investigating, yes indeed, there was a pigeon in our living room sat on the TV!!! (bad piccy coming up as I wasn't quite awake when I took it lol )
Hubby had gone to work leaving the back door open and it had just wandered in (travelling approx 30ft) and settled in the lounge! I phoned hubby to see how long he would be and all he did was laugh!
I put some bird food in the middle of the carpet to try and lure it onto the floor, but that didn't work. The poor gerbils were stomping their feet in fright (they hate birds) so after getting dressed I got hubbies large fishing net from the garage and slowly crept up to it. Just as I was going to pounce, it took off and thankfully flew all the way through the house and out the back door - phew!!!
Here's the intruder now settled back on my roof....
Looks quite pleased with itself doesn't it?!?
Btw, does anyone know what those bands on it's legs mean? There's a flock of these pigeons (all different colours) that regularily sit on my roof but this is the only one with bands on. Is it a homer do you think? |

I found this on the site of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association.
Hope it helps. (Dont feed it and it might buzz off)
If you go to the site it has other info that may help such as phone numbers etc. if it doesn't go.
Stray Pigeons
I've found a racing pigeon... What should I do ?
Racing pigeons can sometimes become lost or disorientated.
They may come down to find food and water or to rest before continuing
on their way.
Please DO NOT report birds that are NOT contained; the majority will clear of their own accord. It is not unusual for a pigeon to stay around for a number of days before it continIn a nutshell
If you find a tired racing pigeon
please give water and food for a day or 2 at the most
only contain it if the pigeon is injured or at risk from a predator
try to release it after a day or two
only report it to us if it will not clear and it is contained
only report to us if it has a GB ring.
*IMPORTANT
Please note that we DO NOT keep records of birds from other British unions. If you find a pigeon that has NEHU, SHU, WHU, NWHU or IHU etc on the ring, please contact that organisation using the details below.
Please DO NOT report birds that are NOT contained; the majority will clear of their own accord. It is not unusual for a pigeon to stay around for a number of days before it continues its journey.
I get loads of other peoples pigeons in my garden that eat all the wild bird food ! Annoying !!
Good luck

T2 | Has its close to the remote, I'd say it was definitely a male Home pigeon.

NigelT - Thanks for that info I've not been putting any food out this past week as I've had a greenfinch with suspected Trichomoniasis in the garden (posted this on 'bird of the day' thread) but Percy pigeon and his friends are still here - he's persistant, I'll give him that. Mind you, if I had have actually caught it and contained it, I've still got another 10 or so to go on the roof!
Perhaps I will report it seeing as it's been here for weeks now?!? |

I have got over some of the problem by making a feeder with an overhanging roof all round and only 75mm above the table which stops them landing on it. It took the small birds a little time to get used to it but now they are happy and feeding well. The pigeons will feed off the dropped food tho' !
I haven't seen a greenfinch in my garden for several years and they used to be regular visitors. Don't know why.

This is my problem. They just hoover up whatever's been dropped by the smaller birds off the feeder poles. But like I said, I've not got any food out at all atm, and they're still here - just checking methinks!
That's a shame you haven't any greenfinches - how strange! Even though there's no food for any birds here at the mo, I still have them in the area singing away on the tops of the trees which I lovely to hear |

A racing pigeon that stays away over a month is likely to have a pretty dusty reception from its owner if it goes back!

In fact i cannot remember seeing ANY finches this year. I get sparrows, dunnucks, blue, coal, great and long tailed tits, Jays, woodpigeons, ring doves and blackbirds but rarely finches any more.
I live adjacent to woodland but there is open fileds some distance away, it may be that the closeness of fields has changed through the masses of houses that have been built between the countryside and my house. Not sure.

With its bum inside the room, you can imagine what it did to the window sill. Needless to say, it didn't stay long. A badminton raquet saw to that - well it did have feathers! |

Once they have been squirted, they buzz off at
the sight of it so they learn quickly.
It sends them away and no harm done.
They could do with a wash anyway.

We filled an ice cream tub full of water and let them bathe in it, then they would sit on the grass drying off. Cometh the Bramble with water gun, and they would lift one wing up then the next |

I've got a menal picture of all that.
It's the sort of thing Ardmans coukld use for their next plasticine pic'
I can visulaise a little towel ring on the nearset tree and a queue of pigeons waiting for their showers. Beats a bird bath.

| | | Re: Catch the Pigeon!!!! Coooooo-ey Nigel!
Well up until last week when I discovered the poorly greenfinch with Trichomoniasis (who's been back today btw, still puffed up, but still alive! ) I had been feeding the birds regularily and at one count there were approx 20+ pigeons on the roof (Percy included of course), but since I've stopped feeding a week ago the numbers have dwindled down to about 3'ish...
I've literally just gone out to look and yep, Percy is the ONLY one on the roof atm! There is no food out at all, so why he's still here is anyones guess.... maybe he like's to watch cartoons on the TV?!?
Could well be a striking postman, but then perhaps I should have called him Pat instead! |
