Question which bird is this?

Hi,

this is my first post. I have been seeing a pair of identical birds in my garden for a few weeks now and have never seen them before.

They look to me to be some kind of finch. Same size, a bright yellow, sleek and slim with a red patch on top of the head but doesn't come down over eyes and black stripe infront of the red. Is some black on wings too. Beaks seem short and thick.they are very striking and always together. i don't know much about birds to be honest but after research online can't come up with anything that is the same. Nearest i can get is other finches but the markings and colours are just not the same.

If they come back i will try to get a photo or two. Any ideas, i would love to know as they are beautiful!

Thanks
Liza

I think it might be a goldfinch.
Try looking in the gallery.

I think goldfinch. Were they on a feeder? What was in the feeder?

Re: which bird is this?

I don't think they are goldfinches as they are mostly yellow. Their beaks are a different shape and the red is only on the crown of their heads and not over the eyes, unless there are variations in the markings, which i wouldn't have a clue? They were on the bird bath and have been feeding from the feeder with an all season mix in it.

I have searched many galleries but can't find any match. As far as i can see there is only yellow, red, black and maybe abit of white on these birds.
Thanks anyway
Liza

They could be escapees, have a look at this site Finchworld The Center for Exotic Finches and see if you can find a match.
