I'm sorting out my Slimbridge photos - to date I've identified 24 Ducks,Geese and Swans.
I'm stuck on this one. I'd say it was a Barrows Goldeneye, but, it has a blue eye.
Can a goldeneye have a blue eye ???!!!

Hi Keith. I think it is a female Goldeneye. The peak on the crown is a good clue (Barrow's is more rounded) and the bill has a small pinkish-yellow area near the tip of the bill whereas a female Barrow's is a lot larger. Not sure about the pale blue eyes though maybe it was a trick of the light? Nicola.

i agree female goldeneye winter visitor on the loch where i work ,funny about the blue eye though ,might be the flash

Thanks for the ID.
The pool was shaded by trees - you can see the green reflection in the water. I used an ISO of 800 because of the shade. There was no flash. The other camera settings were f11 , 1/125sec, 250mm focal length.
Could Slimbridge be a hotbed of inbreeding ! Could they be hybrids ?
