What was this bird ??

As I looked out of an upstairs window this afternoon I noticed a little bird on the back fence. I only cought a quick glimpse as no sooner had I spotted it, it flew off into the back trees. It appeared to be a similar size to a blue tit but the wrong colouring, it appeared to be very bright blue all over, although the extent of the colouring I cannot be a 100 % sure. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen so I quickly got out the bird books but I couldn't find a bird that matched. Can anyone help ??

Re: What was this bird ??

It doesn't sound like any British native I can think of, but... I remember reading a thread, I think on BirdForum about 18 months ago, about a strange mutant Blue Tit hanging around a garden in the ?Midlands, which was almost completely blue. There was a photo, it was quite extraordinary - looked like it had been dipped in ink . John might remember it.

Budgie is definitely a possibility

Re: What was this bird ??

blue tits moult after they've finished breeding, perhaps this was one in very fresh plumage and it whizzed away so fast that your brain just registered the bright blue of fresh feathers?

Re: What was this bird ??

Thank you for all your replys. The more I think about it the more I think it was a Blue tit, even though it didn't quite have the right colouration, it was the size and shape of one.
Thanks once again

It definately wasn't a Nuthatch but what a lovely sight that would have been ( never seen one ), not that I'm suggesting Blue tits are not lovely. I had a look in the gallery earlier and saw a couple of photos of juvenile Blue tits and they looked very similar, a lot more of the blue colouration than the adults and looking slightly paler.
