Many thanks! |

| | | Re: Game bird? Whereabouts were you when you saw it, Graham? Red Grouse are likely to be on Moorland whereas this bird could be a young female Pheasant which would more likely be found on arable. Young pheasants are very variable and have fooled me more than once.

Young pheasants are very variable and have fooled me more than once. | It was this afternoon in Clumber Park, on one of their Heathland areas. This is quite a large area. I did think of a young pheasant, and there certainly are pheasants in that area. There again, there's allsorts of bird life in it, as I've found over the last two days! I managed to get one shot of it in flight. It's not very good but it just might help in the id: |

It was smaller than an adult pheasant, quail size far nearer the mark. It was on its own, no other bird of similar type or size was near it. It made no sound when it flew off, apart from flapping wings that is! |

Regards, Chris | Absolutely, thats why some idea of size would have been helpful

As for overall size, I hadn't realised Quails were so small, so forget my reference to them.
Having looked through my book, I'd say the size was more like a Corncrake, i.e. around 27cm. I'm obviously not for a moment suggesting it's a Corncrake, just using that for a size comparison. |

| | | Re: Game bird? Hi,
I don't think you can take any notice of colour nowadays, we have pheasants over the lakes that are so pale they're almost white [pale gold perhaps], we think they are a Lady Amherst cross, but they could be escapees from The Child Beale Trust about 8 miles upstream on the Thames.

| | | Re: Game bird? Hi,
On looking at the colour again,[the second photo flying] it's nearly the colour of our pheasants, we mainly see them at a distance after dog has put them up, but as you said no long tail.
Max.
