Game bird?

I think this is some type of game bird, but which one? My books show nothing like this one.

Many thanks!

I think it's a female Red Grouse.

Re: Game bird?

It's the colour I'm finding odd. All the illustrations I've found show much darker markings. If anything this images is slightly darker than I remember when I saw it. (Almost trod on it!)

Re: Game bird?

Whereabouts were you when you saw it, Graham? Red Grouse are likely to be on Moorland whereas this bird could be a young female Pheasant which would more likely be found on arable. Young pheasants are very variable and have fooled me more than once.

It was this afternoon in Clumber Park, on one of their Heathland areas. This is quite a large area. I did think of a young pheasant, and there certainly are pheasants in that area. There again, there's allsorts of bird life in it, as I've found over the last two days! I managed to get one shot of it in flight. It's not very good but it just might help in the id:

When I first came across it it was resting on the ground, I almost trod on it. It took off but didn't go far at all. It was smaller than an adult pheasant, quail size far nearer the mark. It was on its own, no other bird of similar type or size was near it. It made no sound when it flew off, apart from flapping wings that is!

Re: Game bird?

Not 100 per cent, but I'm going for young female Pheasant. Quail are really tiny, not much bigger than a House Sparrow.

I'm the last person to offer advice on dodgy birds but my first thought was partridge: everything else okay except the colour/pattern!

Absolutely, thats why some idea of size would have been helpful

Re: Game bird?

Its not a female phesant not got a long tail, not the native quail to large and different plumage, but its got a totally different bill to a red grouse.

think maybe a hen pheasant

Unfortunately the bird flew off as soon as I got my tape measure out, inconsiderate bird

As for overall size, I hadn't realised Quails were so small, so forget my reference to them.

Having looked through my book, I'd say the size was more like a Corncrake, i.e. around 27cm. I'm obviously not for a moment suggesting it's a Corncrake, just using that for a size comparison.

Re: Game bird?

could be juvenile grey partridge, they've turned up in funnier places, but going of the shape of the bill i'm more inclined to go with juvenile pheasant. i don't know....either way its a funny colour!

Yep, it was the colour that had me beat. Hence the post here! I know we all love a challenge!

Re: Game bird?

Hi,

I don't think you can take any notice of colour nowadays, we have pheasants over the lakes that are so pale they're almost white [pale gold perhaps], we think they are a Lady Amherst cross, but they could be escapees from The Child Beale Trust about 8 miles upstream on the Thames.

Re: Game bird?

Hi,

On looking at the colour again,[the second photo flying] it's nearly the colour of our pheasants, we mainly see them at a distance after dog has put them up, but as you said no long tail.

Max.

Re: Game bird?

Could it be a leucistic gamebird-not entirely white, just a bit faded looking? In which case perhaps a female pheasant.

Definately not a Corncrake, head shape, eye and bill are all wrong for that.
