Yesterday i noticed that one of the nestboxes i put up has had the hole seriously opened up. Now this box was fine a month ago, and a Great Tit family fledged chicks from it   
Does this look like Woodpecker work? i don't see many GSW around in the area, but occasionally hear them |

This is just a thought - but could those be rodent-like teeth marks in the wood? What about a grey squirrel having tried to eat its way in?  |

I thought about a squirrel, but i don't know why they'd want to get in the nest box, there are no chicks in there as they fledged ages ago. |

I dunno
does'nt look like a rodent to me. I own gerbil and have fostered a young grey squirrel and the marks don't look right.

I would have thought a squirrel would have been less careful about it, but the hole is pecked all the way around, suggesting whatever did it was looking to continue the round hole I'm wondering whether a Juvenille Woodpecker is looking to roost in it
Be interesting to hear what JeffH thinks about it if he logs on and sees the thread. |

What makes you say that then Colin, does squirrel damage have trademarks that a GSW doesn't. And why would a squirrel be trying to get into a empty nestbox? | | | |
